Full-time: 35 hours/week
Salary: $30.20/hr
Contract: June 1, 2023 - September 30, 2023 (with possibility of renewal)

BIPOC USHR, which stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour United for Strength, Home, Relationship, is a PEI-based not-for-profit organization, providing support and advocacy to Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) folks living on Prince Edward Island. Our aim is to serve Black and POC communities on PEI and work in solidarity with the Mi’kmaq upon whose land we reside.
We work to create various programs (with a current focus on mental and social health, food insecurity, and sexual violence prevention) to create braver spaces in which BIPOC communities will be engaged, supported, and heard.
BIPOC USHR is based on the values of compassion, care, cooperation, and collectivism. We carry and work with feminine energy and recognize the efforts of all BIPOC women and non-binary folks in our collective struggle, along with the struggles of BIPOC cisgender heterosexual men.
Our work is based on the values of anti-racism and decolonization as we work toward social justice for BIPOC communities on PEI. We reject racism/white supremacy, anti-Blackness, anti-Indigeneity, Islamophobia, antisemitism, Sinophobia, colonialism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, classism, ableism, casteism, colourism/shadeism, and all forms of oppression.
Summary of the role and expectations:
The community navigator will report to the executive director. Primary responsibilities include:
Providing outreach and follow-up services addressing the social and emotional needs of BIPOC individuals on PEI through assessment of needs, support, connecting to resources, advocacy, system navigation, identification of system gaps and engaging community to fill those gaps.
Community navigator will respond to and work to locate BIPOC individuals in need of navigation support and advocacy around issues of justice, education, health care, housing, employment, immigration, discrimination, and other needs as they arise.
Community navigators will provide information about services, as well as practical, social, or emotional support. They may triage with client support or care teams, collaborate with relevant community organizations or government departments to support or advocate for BIPOC individuals or communities, and provide advocacy in other ways as necessary.
Community navigators will also assist in developing and delivering programming as and when needed.
The community navigator will work with one other community navigator, often in collaboration, and sometimes independently from them.
Qualifications required:

Priority to those with degree or diploma in social sciences, well-being related/human services related field or equivalent work experience in such a field

Demonstrates a clear and robust understanding of inclusive, anti-oppressive, and anti-racist practice

Experience with and knowledge of cultural safety and associated practices is an asset
-
Demonstrate an understanding of working with historically marginalized communities, including Indigenous, Black, People of Colour, 2SLGBTQIA+, immigrants, persons with disabilities, unhoused, etc.

Have knowledge of and experience living on PEI

Have self-awareness with an understanding of their own limits

First Aid, ASSIST training an asset

Be able to provide a Criminal Record Check

Have a valid driver’s license

Be able to obtain auto liability insurance

Be legally able to work in Canada
Experience/knowledge preferred:

Experienced in community-based case management would be an asset

Demonstration of a good understanding of the needs of BIPOC communities on PEI

Knowledge of community and government resources and services related to justice, education, healthcare, housing, employment, violence prevention, immigration, etc.

Experience and/or knowledge of advocacy work for oneself or others

Self-motivated and able to work as part of a team

Excellent communication skills

Excellent problem-solving skills

Understand the concept of community care

Computer literacy, especially Word and Excel

Fluency in a language other than English would be an asset

Connection to community groups or ethnocultural organizations on PEI would be an asset
